Antique French Porcelain Dresser Box with Handpainted Courting Scene

I recently obtained four vintage French porcelain boxes. They are all from the same collection. I know very little about this sort of thing. They are all marked with Sevres style marks. I am only confident that they are French in origin, but I am uncertain of maker and exact age. The items are being offered as vintage French porcelain boxes with Sevres style marks.

I apologize for my ignorance. You all know more about this box than I do.

Details about this particular box:

This truly spectacular box measures approximately 8-1/4″ long and 3″ tall. It weighs 1 pound 9 ounces. The underside has a Sevres style mark, and the painting is artist signed. Both the mark and signature are pictured below. I am not an expert, but this box seems to be quite early (exact age unknown to me), and the quality of the painting itself is fantastic. I absolutely LOVE it. I think this is undoubtedly the best French porcelain box that I have had the opportunity to offer here on . I was excited to discover it, and I am honored to help find it a new home.

The painting is so visually appealing that I can’t stop looking at it. The colors, the details – the warmth – it’s all there. This box thoroughly impresses me. I am confident that it will make the perfect addition to your collection.

The box opens and closes with ease, and it latches well enough to keep the lid closed, but it only catches a bit. There’s some movement of the lid when it is closed. It’s not a tight closure. You can turn the box upside down, and the lid does not come open, but it does have some separation between the lid and box. It wouldn’t take much to pop it open.

The lid does wiggle a noticeable amount on the hinge, and it doesn’t line up perfectly when closed – seems to be a bit crooked. There is some bending to the hinge and metal frame. The disfigured bending is most noticeable around the hinge. The metal wreath on front has evident bending. The metal as a whole has evident darkening, discoloration, loss, dullness, scratching and related wear.

The material that holds the metal to the porcelain has an evident amount of loss, crudeness, darkening and related wear. The area under the hinge has the most evident amount of loss to this material. Bits of this residue still fall out when the box is handled.

The box wobbles some on the table. It seems to float a bit on the underside center piece.

The side of the box has a 3/4″ area of somewhat inconspicuous scratching and related scuff marks (pictured below). The front of the lid has an approximate 1/2″ line of scratch and bite marks (white showing, just looks like a minor scratch, pictured below). The gold decoration has a good deal of darkening, discoloration, dullness, along with some loss and fading.

The underside edge has a tiny 1.5mm bump (pictured below, picky observation). The glazed area on the underside has an approximate 3-1/2″ x 1/2″ area of scratching that is faint enough that you need a light to easily recognize, but it’s deep enough that you can feel it with your fingernail. On one side of this area, there is a 3/4″ spot of related scratching (located near the edge, discolored some), and to the other side of this scratching, there is a 2-1/2″ x 1-1/2″ area that has some more scratching. If you study the rest of the underside, you will find some other examples of minor scratching here and there.

In short, the glazed area of the underside has a few areas of evident scratching. I have included many photos of this wear.

The underside also has four areas of dry sticker residue that will undoubtedly be difficult to remove. My opinion is that it would probably be best to love the box as it is and not worry about trying to clean the residue off. The underside edges are darkened and discolored.

This wonderfully fine box is in great condition with no chips and no cracks.
