Fishbobbin
6 Antique
Carved Fish Bobbins
or Winders
English
* Circa 1820
These antique
figural bobbins are carved in
the shape of little rounded fishes.
They have been engraved with details on both
sides, stained red. There are 6 and they measure about
2″ long. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other
damage. They
have
a beautiful old patina and nice grain pattern.
They
were used as bobbins for knotting (Macramé style) work. Sylvia Groves
shows some examples in Plate 180 of her book The
History of Needlework Tools and Accessories.
I’ve used similar
ones for this before and they work well. When hanging as
I’ve shown, there’s something about the shape of the tail that
prohibits the bobbin from unwinding too freely. If you have about them, please email
me at cmmeacham on AOL.
