WEATHER VANE or FLAGPOLE TOPPER: ANTIQUE EAGLE, GILDED METAL, AAFA

This is a beautifully modeled and cast antique Eagle made from a metal which I cannot identify except to say that it is non-ferric. The gilding was applied over a heavy coat of mustard colored sizing which was sometimes used on objects meant for outdoors so that when the gilding started to wear, it wouldn’t be so obvious. Much of the gilding and some of the yellow undercoat has worn away and the Eagle has developed some verdigris from exposure to the elements.
I bought this Eagle in New Hampshire more than twenty years ago in a shop along Route 401, if my memory serves me, that runs between Concord and Portsmouth. It used to be called “Antique Alley” as there were dozens of fine antique stores along the way. I haven’t been back in a long time, but the last time I made that run, there were many fewer stores than there used to be.
The man from whom I bought this Eagle told me he thought it was part of an old Weather Vane. Maybe, but I don’t think so. It looks me as if it may have been meant to go on top of a flag pole. Except that it is much too finely modeled: the feathers are all beautifully articulated and the wings are differentiated from each other. The left wing is raised slightly higher and the tips of its end feathers are more curved than those of the right wing. If it was meant for a flag pole, it must have been a special one. Or it could have been part of some other kind of monument which would have been visible at a much closer range than a flag pole. Frankly, I don’t really know.
But I do know that it is a beautiful thing. I have mounted on the top of an old fence post; there is around another inch and a half down in the wood.
On this stand, the Eagle measures 15 1/ inches tall. The Eagle himself is 9 inches from his highest wings tips down to his talons. From wingtip to wingtip he is 11 1/4 inches wide and from his beak to the tip of his tail feathers, he is 6 1/8 inches long.
There doesn’t seem to be any damage to the figure and the surface is completely stable with no flaking or powdering.
Altogether, this Eagle seems to me to be a piece of sculpture rather than a mere ornament and I think the photos give an excellent impression of his great form and patina.
