This is a 4 string lute, ukelele, or 4 string mandolin depending on how you tune it. It is a unique handmade instrument. I know that the NMS company was started in new york in 1897 from the research I’ve done online. I don’t know too much else about it.This is a really cool, odd old instrument, I am not sure of the age, anywhere from 30-115 years old.
I tune it down low to a baritone ukelele range, but it can be tuned up higher to brighten up the sound. I currently use steel guitar strings on it but I think it would prefer nylon strings. It really depends on how bright of a sound you want out of it. Three of the tuners are original, one appears to be a replacement.
Weights about 2.5 lbs. 31″ from headstock to tailpiece, from nut to 19th fret is 13.5″, neck is 1.25″ wide and 1 1/8″ thick. Has a bowl shaped body, sort of triangular neck, and is all solid wood.
