Antique Vtg 1923 Complete Mah Jong Game Set Dovetailed Walnut Box 144 Tiles

Antique
Antique Mahjong Set

This is a beautiful vintage Mah Jong game set dating from the
1920s.  It comes complete with :

144 Vintage Game Tiles 1 pair of tiny antique dice 1 pair of red vintage diceA box full of plastic Mah Jong “money” 3 extra tiles

All pieces and supplies are stored in a beautiful solid wood
box with brass hardware made with great attention to detail and with
considerable skill.  The joints of the
box are all dove-tailed.  I believe it is
made of solid walnut.  It has two brass
handles on top along with brass stops where the handles hit when they fold down
(so they won’t damage the wood).  There
are brass corners on each corner of the box.
Even the back of the box is paneled.

The front of the box is a paneled door hand-carved with 2
Chinese characters and the words “MAH-JONGG”.
The carving has been painted gold.
The front slides up to reveal 5 trays, 4 of the trays hold 36 tiles
each, the bottom tray is deeper than the ones above and is divided into 3
sections to hold additional supplies.
The trays are all in good condition and are made completely of
walnut.  There is a small nick on the top
edge of the bottom tray.

The front panel has a sticker on the backside that reads:

ONE GENUINE SET

MAH-JONGG

MADE IN CHINA

PATENTED APRIL 3,
1923

The bottom of the box is also stamped with patent
information dating back to 1923, see photo.

The box is in very good condition with minimal damage.  The worst damage is on the front panel.  The “slide” on one side has broken off so
that the front panel is only secured on one side.  This doesn’t affect anything unless you turn
the box down on its face.  The deeper
drawer has a small nick on the top edge.
There are a few small specks of paint on one side. There is a small
crack where the wood has shrunk on the opposite side.  I think you can see all of this in the
close-ups.

The box measures 9-1/2” wide x 7” deep x 5-1/2” high.  Though small, the box and tiles are heavy,
the set weighs 7 lbs.

There are 144 tiles (I believe that’s the standard
number).  They appear to be hand-carved with
intricate designs and then hand-painted.
I believe they are made of ivory or bone.  The backside of the tiles is bamboo.  The bamboo is joined to the bone with a
dovetail joint on EACH tile.  The tiles
are in good antique condition, a few have small chips and they could use a good
cleaning/polishing.  Each measures about
1-1/4” tall x 5/8” wide x ½” deep.

One pair of dice is tiny and made of the same material as
the tiles, I believe it is original to the set.
A second pair of dice looks vintage, not antique, they are red and made
of plastic.  There is also a box of Mah
Jong money, that looks like it dates to the 1950s.  The “coins” are plastic.  This cardboard box and the “coins” are in
, as are the dice.
